Sleep Cycles Explained
Sleep moves through roughly 90-minute cycles of light, deep, and REM sleep. Learn what happens in each stage and why wake-up timing matters.
An alarm can catch you at the wrong moment and leave you exhausted, even after a full night’s sleep. One reason is waking in the middle of a sleep cycle rather than near its end.
The four stages, in order
A typical sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and moves through these stages:
- Light sleep (N1/N2) - the transition into sleep and the largest share of total sleep time. Easy to wake from.
- Deep sleep (N3) - the most physically restorative stage. Waking up here is where the worst grogginess (sleep inertia) comes from.
- REM sleep - associated with dreaming and memory consolidation. Brain activity here looks surprisingly similar to being awake.
- Back to light sleep, and the cycle repeats.
Early in the night, cycles lean more heavily toward deep sleep. Later cycles shift toward more REM. That's part of why cutting a night short at the end (versus the beginning) costs you disproportionately more REM sleep.
Why timing your wake-up matters
Deep sleep is the hardest stage to wake up from cleanly. If your alarm happens to land there, you'll likely feel groggy even if you technically got "enough" hours. Waking up during light sleep - which happens naturally near the boundary between cycles - tends to feel much easier.
Planning around complete sleep cycles can give your alarm a better chance of landing near a cycle boundary instead of in the middle of deep sleep.
An important caveat
Ninety minutes is an average, not a fixed number. Cycle length can range from about 80 to 120 minutes and shifts through the night and between people. Cycle-based planning is an estimate, not a guarantee.
